Earlier today, we saw the first trailer for Joe Dante’s family oriented spookster THE HOLE 3D. Dovetailing nicely with that story is a recent sit-down the dude had with Empire to talk about the film, its premise, how it’s the kind of film he’d make back in the 80s, etc. But if that doesn’t happen to be your shot of whiskey, how does talk of a third GREMLINS film sound? Thought that might perk up your ears…
We all know Hollywood’s major studios are currently infatuated with going back to the future, in essence remaking almost every popular 80s property they can secure rights to. We literally just posted an article on an example of which; Joe Dante’s PIRANHA has gotten the once over from French filmmaker Alexandre Aja. But is a low budget flick about an uncouth school of maneaters really the most likely to be a cross-generational hit? It seems one flick of Dante’s that’s destined for remake/reboot success is GREMLINS. After all, here’s a film co-responsible for the creation of the PG-13 rating, a category meant to usher as many asses into seats as possible.
So what’s the deal, why hasn’t GREMLINS been flat out remade or even sequelized again in the last 20 years? Here’s how Dante himself frames it:
“It’s been heavily booted around on the internet that there is a Gremlins 3 and then somebody said ‘Gremlins 3? Gremlins 3-D! I bet it’s a sequel in 3-D and I bet they’re gonna ask Joe to do it!” Well the answer is no, no and no.”
He continues:
“I’m sure it’ll happen. It’s too valuable a title to not get the remake treatment. I think it will be a remake rather than a sequel. I think they’ll start over and do a remake or a sequel.”
One thing I’ve learned is, if internet rumblings persist long enough, they often come to fruition (just ask Jackie Earle Haley!)
But as promised, that’s not all. Dante took the opportunity to chat up his new PG-13 (irony?) chiller THE HOLE 3D, about a pair of brothers who stumble upon a mysterious hole in their basement that leads to the darkest corridors of their fears and nightmares. Peep it:
“It’s a retro type horror picture, the type of movie that I was doing in the ‘80s,” he told us. “It’s about a bunch of kids who go down to the basement of a new house and find a door with locks on it among the junk in the basement is. Like any respectable movie kids, their mission is to get this door open and see what’s in there. They manage to get the door open and there’s a hole that leads to God knows what. Something comes out of the hole. Of course I couldn’t tell you what…”
As well you shouldn’t Mr. Dante, the flick doesn’t even have an official release date.
More on THE HOLE when we lock it.
