Today Variety dropped word on yet another remake of a Japanese film. Fortunately it’s not really of a ‘ghost story,’ as are most Japanese remakes. Instead, this one sounds like a pretty twisted thriller.
The original was called YOMIGAERI (RESURRECTION). It was based off the novel by Shinji Kajio. RESURRECTION follows a government official who is sent to a rural town to investigate a child who, after vanishing for 60 years, returns to his mother not having aged at all.
If that doesn’t say twisted fun time, than what does? Apparently the rights to this film took some work. Dreamworks execs had to travel back and forth to Japan for six months to score this deal. Supposedly a number of studios had their eyes on RESURRECTION for some time now.
GLADIATOR scribe William Nicholson will be penning the script with production eyeing a late 2008 start date.
