PRINCE OF PERSIA is one of my favorite video game franchises. It’s just a blast to play. The story, the characters, the gameplay, the graphics… it’s all grade A in my opinion. So when I first heard it was being made into a flick, I was tickled pink!

The last we heard, Mike Newell was in line to direct. Now the big question is, who’s going to star in this bad boy? There’ve been numerous names thrown around, including Orlando Bloom and an actual prince. Well folks, Latino Review just got word that the role has been offered to one Jake Gyllenhaal (above).

Well, assuming Gyllenhaal isn’t busy playing Spider-Man of course. Seriously though, I’m ok with this. I’ve been a fan fo Mr. Gyllenhaal’s since DONNIE DARKO, so I can definately see him pulling off ‘The Prince’ Dastan.

Truth be told though… I don’t see him as the perfect casting. My idea of perfect casting for The Prince would be ENTOURAGE’s Adrian Grenier. Well at least that’s the perfect casting I can think of off the top of my head.

Mind you, this news is that Gyllenhaal has been OFFERED the role, not that he’s taken it. PRINCE OF PERSIA: SANDS OF TIME will be based of the installment in the video game franchise of the same name, the synopsis reads:

In medieval Persia, Earth’s mightiest and most mysterious kingdom, a king and his son defeat the powerful Maharajah, looting his palace of priceless treasure, including an extravagant hourglass and a mysterious dagger. What the Prince does not realize is that these two objects can turn their possessor into an immortal god, and give him control over time itself. Tricked by a dying Vizier bent on harnessing this terrible magic for himself, the Prince releases the Sands of Time, destorying a kingdom and turning its populace into ferocious demons. Now, it is up to the young Prince of Persia to call upon every resource and ounce of courage he possesses to save his kingdom and redeem his fatal mistake.

The script for the flick comes from the duo of Jeffrey Nachmanoff (who penned the Gyllenhaal starring DAY AFTER TOMORROW) and Jordan Mechner (who created PRINCE OF PERSIA). We’ll keep you updated on any other news from PERSIA.
