Even though I haven’t seen any of his work, it seems Park Chan-wook knows what he’s doing when it comes to badass revenge flicks. He’s the man behind the trilogy of revenge themed movies including OLDBOY, SYMPATHY FOR MR. VENGEANCE, and SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE. He’s also the guy behind the upcoming vampire flick THIRST, which I last told you about here.
Here’s a name you never thought you’d see associated with Park Chan-wook. The beautiful Charlize Theron (below) recently spoke to The Boston Globe while in town to support indie flick SLEEPWALKING. During the interview she dropped the news that she’ll be producing and starring in a remake of Park Chan-wook’s SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE. I love how Charlize Theron keeps choosing these roles she can really chew on, where her amazing looks mean nothing. Then again, Theron’s looks are in a league of their own.
Anyway, the synopsis for the original LADY VENGEANCE reads: After thirteen and half years in prison for kidnapping and murdering the boy Park Won-mo, Geum-ja Lee is released and tries to fix her life. She finds a job in a bakery; she orders the manufacturing of a special weapon; she reunites with her daughter, who was adopted by an Australian family; and she plots revenge against the real killer of Won-mo, the English teacher Mr. Baek. With the support of former inmates from prison, Geum-ja seeks an unattained redemption with her vengeance.
Interesting to note how Theron will also be producing this revenge-filled beauty. Let’s hope she keeps it close to the original, which is pretty good apparently. We’ll keep you updated on anything for Charlize Theron’s SYMPATHY FOR LADY VENGEANCE.
