Sony gets District

A couple days ago Eric told you all about DISTRICT 9. In case you didn’t hear, Peter Jackson and Neill Blomkamp (the duo that were set to tackle the HALO movie) are still planning to team up, but instead of a live-action sci-fi flick based on a video game, they’re going to be working on… a live-action sci-fi flick.

The news rolling in today from The Hollywood Reporter is that Sony Pictures have picked up the rights to DISTRICT 9. Now like I mentioned, Jackson and Blomkamp were set to bring us a movie based on the video game franchise HALO. This was some heavy news for a while until it was nixed. Why? A variety of reasons. Obviously there’s money to be made there, so I’m sure we’ll see HALO on the big screen at some point. Unfortunately not any time soon, at least not from Jackson/Blomkamp.

Blomkamp and Terri Tatchell wrote the script for DISTRICT 9. They’re keeping it very tightly sealed at the time though, so nothing at all is known other than the fact that it’s a live-action science fiction flick. Well that’s a pretty broad subject, so your guess is as good as mine. The film scored $10 million+ from Sony. Jackson will be producing with Blomkamp directing. The film is set to begin filming this spring in South Africa. Something has to give as to what DISTRICT 9 is about soon, so we’ll keep you updated.
