Hooper’s Buick

Well looks like Stephen King’s FROM A BUICK 8 is finally starting to get a leg to stand on. A long time ago it was rumored that George Romero would be directing the film version of King’s novel, some heavy rumors actually that were almost true. Well those rumors have finally been put to rest.

Variety is reporting that the new man behind King’s FROM A BUICK 8 will be none other than THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE director Tobe Hooper! I think that’s some major news. Hooper’s last feature was MORTUARY, which was an acquired taste. I liked some parts, but it lacked a lot. Many people have split reviews on it. I haven’t yet seen Hooper’s MASTERS OF HORROR episodes (THE DAMNED THING and DANCE OF THE DEAD), but I plan too. I’m hoping FROM A BUICK 8 is along the lines of vintage Tobe.

As for writers, actor/writer Johnathan Schaech and Richard Chizmar wrote the screenplay, they’ll also be producing along with Mick Garris, Etchie Stroh, and Robert Katz. Moonstone Entertainment and Amicus Entertainment will be behind the release.

According to Variety, FROM A BUICK 8 is about a mysterious Buick stored in a state trooper barracks. After one of the troopers dies, his son becomes obsessed with the mysterious vintage automobile. Now I haven’t read the book, but it reminds me a lot of CHRISTINE, another Stephen King book-turned-movie. Hooper had this to say:

“From a Buick 8” will not be “your stock horror film by any means. There’s a really cool, layered quality to the story,” Hooper said. “The producers, writers and I shared the same sensibility about the project and responded to it in a similar way.”

So there you have it. We’ll probably be seeing this one sometime in 2009. We’ll keep you updated.
