THE TALISMAN has been 25 years in the making…. and it’ll be a little more. Word is the project has been put on hold because of budget issues.
In case your wondering what THE TALISMAN is, it’s a book by Stephen King and Peter Straub about a boy’s quest through this world and a parallel world known as the Territories to find a talisman that will save his mother, is said to involve elaborate special effects. Steven Spielberg optioned the book 25 years ago to bring it to the screen, but it’s been shelved everytime something is about to happen.
Here’s the timeline: In the early 90s, Richard LaGravenese wrote a draft for the film, but it never happened. In 2000, it was supposed to be a 4-hour mini-series on ABC, produced by Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy, with Mick Garris writing and directing, but the project hit it’s first share of budget problems. Then it was planned to be released in July/September 2004 with writers and directors Ehren Kruger, Carlo Bernard, Doug Miro, Vadim Perelman, and Ed Zwick all attached at one point or another, but it was put on hold. Then Steven Spielberg pitched the idea to TNT’s Michael Wright for an adapatation of THE TALISMAN, and here we are. It was scheduled to be a 6-hour adaptation to air in the summer of 08, but who knows now.
TNT and DreamWorks are currently working on the budget issues, no telling how this one is going to turn out, but we’ll keep you updated.
