The Batman director says the Batmobile was inspired by Stephen King’s Christine

Director Matt Reeves drew inspiration from Stephen King's Christine when figuring out how to bring his version of the Batmobile to the screen

Yesterday, we shared a quote from The Batman director Matt Reeves in which he revealed that his film’s version of Bruce Wayne was inspired by Kurt Cobain. That quote came from an interview with Empire, and Slash Film reports that Reeves also told the magazine that the version of the Batmobile seen in The Batman (a Batmobile that Bruce Wayne built himself) was inspired by a horror icon: the possessed Plymouth Fury from Stephen King’s Christine!

Reeves explains,

(The Batmobile) has to make an appearance out of the shadows to intimidate, so I thought of it almost like Stephen King’s Christine. I liked the idea of the car itself as a horror figure, making an animalistic appearance to really scare the hell out of the people Batman’s pursuing. There is absolutely a horror genre aspect to this movie.”

Directed by Reeves from a screenplay he wrote with Peter Craig and Mattson Tomlin, The Batman has the following synopsis:

The Batman is an edgy, action-packed thriller that depicts Batman in his early years, struggling to balance rage with righteousness as he investigates a disturbing mystery that has terrorized Gotham. Robert Pattinson delivers a raw, intense portrayal of Batman as a disillusioned, desperate vigilante awakened by the realization that the anger consuming him makes him no better than the ruthless serial killer he’s hunting.

The film stars Robert Pattinson as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as Lt. James Gordon, Zoë Kravitz as Selina Kyle / Catwoman, Colin Farrell as Oswald Cobblepot / The Penguin, John Turturro as Carmine Falcone, Paul Dano as Edward Nashton / The Riddler, Peter Sarsgaard as Gotham D.A. Gil Colson, and Jayme Lawson as mayoral candidate Bella Reál.

Reeves produced The Batman with Dylan Clark. Michael E. Uslan, Walter Hamada, Chantal Nong Vo, and Simon Emanuel serve as executive producers.
