You don’t look at Timothée Chalamet and think cannibal. And he’s certainly not, but the connection through Armie Hammer can’t be denied. Not only did he co-star alongside Hammer in 2017’s Call Me By Your Name, but the director of that film, Luca Guadagnino, cast Chalamet in Bones and All, a cannibal love story.
On the connection between the accusations against Armie Hammer over assault and cannibalism, Timothée Chalamet said in a recent GQ profile, “I mean, what were the chances that we’re developing this thing?” Still, he knew he couldn’t shy away from Bones and All because of this, accepting the challenge – and all of the publicity that came with – so as not to give the public perception that he was purposely avoiding the topic. “It made me feel like: Now I’ve really got to do this…Because this is actually based on a book.”
On all of the tabloid and journalistic exposure Armie Hammer received over the allegations, Timothée Chalamet noted he was thrown due to the ongoing whirlwind. “These things end up getting clickbaited so intensely. Disorienting is a good word.” Ahead of Bones and All’s premiere at the 2022 Venice Film Festival, director Guadagnino denied seeing any link between the cannibal characters and his former star, saying, “Any link with anything else exists only in the realm of social media, with which I do not engage. The relationship between this kind of digital muckraking and our wish to make this movie is non-existent and it should be met with a shrug.” Well, a shrug is better than a bite…
Bones and All was met with warm reception, with our own JimmyO giving it an 8/10 and calling it a “strange romantic journey.” It would go on to win the Best Director prize at Venice, earn three Independent Spirit Award nominations and more.
While Timothée Chalamet doesn’t have a taste for blood, his sweet tooth will take over as he prepares for the December release of Wonka, in which he plays the titular chocolatier.
