Almost three years have gone by since it was announced that writer/director David Robert Mitchell and actress Maika Monroe are reteaming for a sequel to horror film It Follows. The sequel is being called They Follow – and now that the project is finally gearing up for production, Mitchell has confirmed that several of his key collaborators will be returning for the sequel, which he describes as being “its own unique thing.”
What is It Follows about?
Released in 2014, It Follows has the following synopsis: After carefree teenager Jay sleeps with her new boyfriend, Hugh, for the first time, she learns that she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse that is passed from victim to victim via sexual intercourse. Death, Jay learns, will creep inexorably toward her as either a friend or a stranger. Jay’s friends don’t believe her seemingly paranoid ravings, until they too begin to see the phantom assassins and band together to help her flee or defend herself.
Who’s working on They Follow?
Maika Monroe played Jay in the first movie and will be reprising the role in the sequel, making this the first time she has ever had the chance to play a character again. Naomi Ackie (Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody) is joining her in the cast of They Follow.
Plot details on the sequel are being kept under wraps, but we know that it will take place a decade after the events of the original film.
Monroe previously told Discussing Film, “I was sent the script and I thought it was incredible. It’s also very different from the original. I felt the original was a little more heightened and dramatic, and this I think is really quite grounded. (The sequel) follows the story of these two women that are just mentally dealing with a lot. I thought it was a really interesting take on it.“
NEON is co-producing the film with Good Fear Content. Mitchell is producing with Jake Weiner and Chris Bender of Good Fear Content, as well as the original producers of It Follows, David Kaplan, Erik Rommesmo, Rebecca Green, and Laura Smith.
Speaking with Empire, Mitchell confirmed that cinematographer Mike Gioulakis and editor Julio C. Perez IV are coming back for They Follow, and Disasterpeace will be composing the score. “I wouldn’t want to do a sequel without [Disasterpeace]. That first movie is so much to do with his fantastic music, so I’m excited about seeing what he does with this.“
Mitchell went on to say, “I’m very proud of the script. It is its own unique thing, while still being very much connected to the first film. It’s doing something cool that is going to be really fun.“
