Well Go USA Entertainment has dropped a trailer for Colony, a new zombie action-thriller from Yeon Sang-ho, the man who gave us Train to Busan and Peninsula. Check out the trailer above, it’s packed full of blood, guts, and other fluids, and you might even catch a quote from our own Chris Bumbray’s review of the film. Looks like fun!
Colony
Colony follows “Professor Se-jeong as she is thrust into a terrifying hellscape when a mutating virus is unleashed during a biotech conference, forcing authorities to seal the facility to contain the outbreak. Unable to escape, Se-jeong and a group of survivors must fight to stay alive as the infected undergo horrific transformations and threaten to spread the virus.“
The film stars Jun Ji-hyun, Koo Kyo-hwan, Ji Chang-wook, Kim Shin-rok, Shin Hyun-been, and Go Soo. Yeon directs from a script he co-wrote with Choi Gyu-seok.
The concept of a zombie hive mind is interesting, particularly as they seem to be evolving through “information exchange,” going from awkwardly crawling to becoming an unstoppable horde by the end of the trailer.
What We Thought
Bumbray caught the film at Cannes earlier this year and quite enjoyed it, although he admitted it wasn’t quite on the same level as Train to Busan. “Like a lot of South Korean genre fare, the budget on this one seems high, with it having top-notch production values and an epic feel,” he wrote. “I’ve always found this to be an interesting contrast to how North America treats horror, as it’s rare outside of a few examples – such as World War Z – for movies like this to really be made on a tentpole level. Clearly Colony was made to be a blockbuster, as it’s lavishly mounted.”
He continued, “While Colony isn’t the best zombie movie I’ve seen recently (I’d give that honour to The Bone Temple) and likely won’t be the best comic-book movie out this year (I have high hopes for the new Resident Evil), it will no doubt please fans when it comes out this summer. It’s not up to the level of Train to Busan, but it’s wildly entertaining and slickly made.“
