Naomi Watts on her secret role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Fourteen years ago, Naomi Watts and Tom Holland starred in The Impossible, a disaster drama based on a real family’s struggle to survive the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, and now, the pair have reunited in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

If you’ve already seen Spider-Man: Brand New Day and were wondering where Watts pops up, well, you won’t actually see her, but you will hear her. She voices E.V., Peter Parker’s artificial intelligence assistant.

Watts shared a photo and a congratulatory note on Instagram. “From playing your mom to playing your AI (100% human made),” she wrote. “Congrats Tom, Destin, and the whole Spider-Man: Brand New Day team on the historic opening weekend!! Immensely proud to even just a tiny part of this incredible film!” You can see Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton on the screen behind her.

Spider-Man: Brand New is Huge

Spider-Man Brand New Day is now playing in theaters, and it’s been an enormous success. It’s already grossed $1.053 billion after just six days of release. That’s crazy. Folks sure do love Spider-Man, and I’m wondering if Brand New Day might even end up besting Avengers: Doomsday. I suppose we’ll see how well the film continues to perform over the next few weeks.

Our own Chris Bumbray called Brand New Day a surprisingly mature Spider-Man movie that doesn’t try to compete with the spectacle of all three live-action Spider-Men teaming up in No Way Home.

“I had a good time with Brand New Day,” he wrote. “While it wasn’t the rollercoaster ride No Way Home was or as innovative as the animated Spider-Verse movies, I preferred it to the first two Holland-led Spider-Man movies. It’s surprisingly mature, with some strong characterization as the character evolves into a more adult-skewing hero.“
