The Crypt Keeper has been resurrected! The iconic host of Tales from the Crypt is returning to the screen for AMC’s 30th anniversary celebration of FearFest, marking the first new Crypt Keeper content in decades. And with The Walking Dead director and special effects master Greg Nicotero behind the new material, this isn’t simply a case of dusting off some old footage.
AMC Global Media announced that the Crypt Keeper, once again voiced by John Kassir, will serve as the host of this year’s FearFest horror programming event. Nicotero has recreated the legendary puppet at his KNB EFX studio, giving the character a refreshed look, movement and personality while retaining the qualities that made the Crypt Keeper one of horror’s most recognizable figures.
Nicotero also directed a series of new Crypt Keeper segments for FearFest, with Kassir returning to provide the character’s trademark voice, laughs and macabre sense of humor.
“What a great honor and privilege to re-create this iconic character and get a chance to revisit some of his clever quips and puns with John Kassir again reprising his role,” said Nicotero. “Having the chance to re-create Kevin Yagher’s amazing puppet at my studio KNB EFX and get the opportunity to ‘direct him’ in a series of FearFest spots was like going back in time and I couldn’t be more pleased with the outcome.”
The return is especially notable because the Tales from the Crypt franchise has spent years trapped in a complicated web of rights issues. The last major attempt to resurrect the property was a planned TNT series from filmmaker M. Night Shyamalan in 2016. TNT ordered 10 episodes, with the proposed revival intended to anchor a larger horror programming block. The project eventually collapsed as the network struggled to untangle the property’s underlying rights.
In 2023, Kassir offered some insight into the rights complications, explaining that different pieces of the Tales from the Crypt property and the Crypt Keeper character were controlled by different rights holders. According to Kassir, the rights to the original comic material had reverted to the EC Comics family, while the producers of the HBO series retained rights connected to their version of the Crypt Keeper.
So we have to wonder, could the return of the Crypt Keeper be a sign that a full Tales from the Crypt revival is finally possible? It’s certainly tempting to read it that way, but AMC has not announced a new Tales from the Crypt series. For now, the Crypt Keeper’s resurrection is specifically tied to FearFest. Still, after the rights problems that helped kill Shyamalan’s proposed revival, getting John Kassir back behind a newly recreated version of Kevin Yagher’s famous puppet is a pretty incredible development for fans of the series.
AMC’s 30th anniversary FearFest will kick off October 1 on AMC and AMC+, with more than 650 hours of horror programming planned throughout the month. The lineup includes marathons featuring Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Final Destination, Insidious, and movies from the Stephen King library.
The original Tales from the Crypt will also be available to stream on AMC+ and Shudder, with all seven seasons of the classic 1990s anthology series included. The HBO series originally ran from 1989 through 1996 and featured the Crypt Keeper introducing self-contained horror stories filled with dark humor, gruesome deaths, and the character’s famously terrible (or terrific) puns. The series also attracted an impressive collection of guest stars and directors, including Brad Pitt, Demi Moore, John Lithgow, Christopher Reeve, Catherine O’Hara, Steve Buscemi, and Brooke Shields, with episodes directed by filmmakers like Robert Zemeckis, Tobe Hooper, William Friedkin, and even Arnold Schwarzenegger.
FearFest will also feature the AMC premiere of The Terror: Devil in Silver, the latest installment in the supernatural anthology series, as well as the AMC+ exclusive YAGA, starring Noah Reid, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Hudson Williams.
But the Crypt Keeper is the big story here. After decades without new Crypt Keeper material, John Kassir is once again providing that unmistakable voice, Greg Nicotero has brought the practical puppet back to life, and one of horror television’s most beloved hosts is getting ready to welcome audiences to FearFest. Whether this eventually opens the door to something bigger for Tales from the Crypt remains to be seen. For now, though, the Crypt Keeper is officially back.
