With recent rumours positioning Callum Turner as the next James Bond, Pierce Brosnan is just like the rest of us, eagerly awaiting the official announcement, but he did give the young actor a shout-out.

Pierce Brosnan on Callum Turner as Bond

While chatting with Vanity Fair, Brosnan was asked about James Bond and the group of actors who have been in the mix for the role. He was complimentary toward all of them, but he did single out Turner, with whom he worked on The Only Living Boy in New York. The other names who are said to be Bond finalists are Jack Lowden and Josh O’Connor.

“Oh, I’m just an audience member now,” he said. “I’m just the man in the street who is eager to see who is going to play this epic role of cinematic history. All the men who are on the list now are actors I admire. Callum Turner is someone I’ve worked with, and he’s so strong. They all have a voice and a physique, and a presence on film. They all have longevity as actors, all of these young men. Whoever plays the role, I wish him the very best of life and strength and courage. You know, it’s hard to tell who it would be, but I eagerly await to hear the news and the celebration of the next James Bond.“

Brosnan added that he’s also looking forward to what director Denis Villeneuve will do with the new film. “I think we are going to be blown away,” he said. “[Villeneuve] is such an iconoclastic director. His work is visionary, and his stealth and imagination of camera work and storytelling is so visceral and sensuous. It’s going to be great. It’s going to be truly magnificent.“

Jack Lowden Comments on Bond

Jack Lowden has been one of the favourites to play James Bond, and he’s got support from his Slow Horses co-star Gary Oldman. Lowden recently commented on the Bond rumours.

“It’s all very flattering. It’s nice to be mentioned — for any role — and I’m just not really going to add to the noise,” he said. “It’s very nice, and Gary’s a sweetheart. It’s particularly lovely, coming from someone like him. But I don’t really listen to it.“

Oldman spoke about the Bond casting earlier this year, and put in his vote for Lowden. “It’s been rumored that [Lowden] is on the shortlist…we’re going to find out pretty soon, aren’t we?” he said. “Because they have picked him. They have made their choice, but they have not announced it yet. So my fingers are crossed for Jack.“
