Brad Pitt’s Cliff Booth is back, and his Hollywood reputation has only grown. The new full-length trailer for The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth gives us our best look yet at David Fincher’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood follow-up, which features a script by Quentin Tarantino.
Netflix hasn’t exactly been generous with peeks at what has to be one of the biggest cinematic events of the year. The earlier trailers were brief, and the official one-sheet only arrived the other day. With Fincher directing Tarantino’s Oscar-winning leading man in a sequel to one of his most beloved movies, there’s certainly plenty to be curious about.
What does the new Cliff Booth trailer reveal?
Picking up eight years after Cliff took on the Manson Family, the movie finds him something of an underground Hollywood legend. Everyone greets him with amazement—not because of the Manson stuff, but because he fought Bruce Lee and won. Naturally, that’s a nod to the most controversial element of the original film.
Cliff, who is now caring for his elderly father, played by RoboCop himself, Peter Weller, has become a fixer. A TV star played by Scott Caan hires him to get out of a sticky situation involving Filipino gangsters.
In addition to Pitt, Weller and Caan, the film also stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Elizabeth Debicki, Carla Gugino, and more.
As one of the original film’s biggest fans, I’m incredibly excited for the follow-up, although I do have one major caveat: its visual style.
Fincher’s regular cinematographer, Erik Messerschmidt, shoots in the director’s preferred digital style, which is a sharp contrast to the gorgeous 35mm photography of the original. That difference has stood out to me in each of the trailers.
That said, Fincher is Fincher, and the movie definitely SOUNDS like Tarantino. I love both those guys, so I’m 100% on board. Still, I must admit I’m even more excited for Tarantino’s novelization, which comes out in December.
When does The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth come out?
The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth opens exclusively in IMAX on November 25 before making its Netflix debut on December 23, just in time for Christmas.
