The continuing pandemic has knocked writer/director Rose Glass's possession thriller SAINT MAUD out of its release date for a second time.
Distributor A24 had originally announced an April release for the film in the US, but in March they had to pull it from the schedule due to theatre closures. They waited until June to announce a new date, July 17th, but now it has become clear that theatres aren't going to be ready for it at that time, so A24 has delayed the film again. A new release date has not yet been announced.
The distributor had been planning to release a film called FIRST COW in March, but that movie will now be heading straight to VOD with the potential of "special theatrical events" later in the year. We'll have to wait and see if SAINT MAUD will get a similar release. If they're determined to get it into US theatres, maybe they'll give it a date closer to the UK release date that StudioCanal UK has scheduled for it, October 23rd.
This is Glass's first feature and is said to be "a stunning horror debut in the vein of HEREDITARY and THE WITCH". It has also been described as a "chilling and boldly original vision of faith, madness, and salvation in a fallen world".
Starring Morfydd Clark and Jennifer Ehle, the film tells the story of
Maud, a newly devout hospice nurse, becomes obsessed with saving her dying patient’s soul — but sinister forces, and her own sinful past, threaten to put an end to her holy calling.
Lilly Frazer, Lily Knight, Marcus Hutton, Turlough Convery, and Rosie Sansom are also in the cast.
