With his latest film THE MARTIAN now safely in theatres, Ridley Scott is looking ahead to his next project, the PROMETHEUS follow-up/ALIEN prequel ALIEN: PARADISE LOST, something he's been answering questions about a lot while doing press for THE MARTIAN.
While PARADISE LOST heads toward its early 2016 production, DISTRICT 9/ELYSIUM/CHAPPIE director Neill Blomkamp has been developing his own ALIEN project, a sequel that will apparently see Sigourney Weaver and Michael Biehn reprising their roles as franchise heroine Ripley and ALIENS' Corporal Dwayne Hicks. We know that Blomkamp's ALIEN movie will start filming sometime after Scott's, and if things continue going smoothly it sounds like it will be following close on PARADISE LOST's heels.
Talking to The Daily Beast, Scott gave an update on the status of Blomkamp's sequel in the midst of discussing his prequel:
And we have Neill Blomkamp’s Alien, which will be out in 2017. We just have the first [screenplay] draft in so far but it looks pretty good.
It will be interesting to see what release dates these movies are scheduled for, because ALIEN: PARADISE LOST is already expected to have a 2017 release. From what Scott has said, right now it looks like we might be getting both ALIEN movies that year. That sounds good to me, I don't mind not having to wait very long between ALIEN adventures.
