Director David F. Sandberg got his feature film career started with feature expansion of his short horror film Lights Out. He followed that with the Conjuring Universe prequel Annabelle: Creation, then jumped into the superhero world for Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods. He circled back to horror for the video game adaptation Until Dawn, and it was recently announced that he’ll be staying there for a reimagining of The Amityville Horror. Now, Deadline reports that Sandberg has added another horror project to his slate: A Little Slice of Hell, which he’ll be making for Paramount Pictures.
Story
A Little Slice of Hell is based on a short story of the same name by John Goodrich, which was originally published in the first issue of Assemble Artifacts, the short story magazine from Assemble Media. The story follows two underpaid supermarket employees who realize that they should have read the employee manual after encountering a customer from Hell — literally.
Greg Weidman and Geoff Tock, who have previously written for TV shows like Limitless and Zoo at CBS, are writing the script, working not just from Goodrich’s story but also a previous draft of the script that was written by The Big Sick’s Emily V. Gordon. (Whose husband, actor/comedian Kumail Nanjiani, recently announced that he’ll be making his feature directorial debut with a horror film called Howl.)
Maximum Effort
Johnny Pariseau, Patrick Gooing, and Molly Milstein are producing A Little Slice of Hell for Maximum Effort, alongside Jack Heller, Caitlin de Lisser-Ellen for Assemble, and Lotta Losten.
I haven’t read A Little Slice of Hell, but it sounds like it has a fun set-up, so I look forward to seeing how a feature adaptation is going to turn out. I have also been following the career of David F. Sandberg since he caught attention with the short film that led to Lights Out, so it will be interesting to see what he does with this subject matter. I wasn’t a fan of Until Dawn, but I thought he did well with Lights Out, Annabelle: Creation, and the Shazam movies.
