A24 scares up Casey Affleck’s A Ghost Story ahead of Sundance

Last Updated on July 21, 2021

So confident in David Lowery's haunting new picture A GHOST STORY is prestigious distributor A24, that they bought the rights to the film before even making its Sundance premier. True, with less than two weeks before the film festival officially launches, Variety is reporting that A24 has taken distribution rights to the film. The company did the very same thing with Affleck's MANCHESTER BY THE SEA last year, a movie that has landed Affleck the Golden Globe and Oscar front-runner for Best Lead Actor. I wonder if that means we'll ave wo wait until next awards season to see the film.

Speaking of A GHOST STORY, it has the following synopsis:

Lowery’s meticulously sparse narrative contemplates a spectral figure who was once a man (Casey Affleck). Prematurely taken from this Earth, he makes his way toward his former home, where he is fated to remain forevermore. Shrouded in a white sheet, he observes the lament of his grief-stricken lover (Rooney Mara). Bearing unseen witness to her pain, the wisp stands sentry for years to come, interacting only with time as it hurtles further and further forward, the remnants of his humanity quietly evaporating.

The flick reunites Affleck with not only Lowery, but Rooney Mara as well, all three of which worked together on AIN'T THEM BODIES SAINTS back in 2013. Word is A GHOST STORY was filmed on the sly and not even announced publicly until it wrapped photography. At a brisk 87 minutes, the film also stars Will Oldham, Liz Franke, Augustine Frizzell, Rob Zabrecky and Sonia Acevedo. It's set to screen at Sundance on January 22nd.
