An adaptation of William Gibson’s The Peripheral is in the works at Amazon

Last Updated on July 30, 2021

Have you ever pondered the concept of an alternate reality? Do you often wonder what your life would be like if you'd made different choices along tha way, forever changing the trajectory of your walk through this world? Well, we've gotten word that Amazon is looking to pose these questions and more to their viewers, while developing an adaptation of William Gibson's science fiction novel THE PERIPHERAL.

Writing the new series for Amazon's digital service will be Scott B. Smith, who is also in-line to executive produce alongside WESTWORLD creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy. The story of THE PERIPHERAL follows Flynne Fisher, a woman in a near future America in which technology has started to subtly alter society. Flynne discovers a hidden connection to a very different reality — and the dark future of her own.

The acquisition of the rights to Gibson's novel marks another big get for Amazon, who've been scooping up properties left and right with the hope of landing their own major franchise series. The series will be directed by Vincenzo Natali, who in the past has helmed such sci-fi cult classics as CUBE and SPLICE. In more recent times, Natali has been the man behind the camera for such high-profile television shows as LUKE CAGE, HANNIBAL, and WESTWORLD.
