Last year, it was announced that Cobra Kai creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg are teaming up with Legendary to produce a feature film based on The History Channel’s hit series Ancient Aliens. Now The Hollywood Reporter has broken the news that the project has found its writer: Ancient Aliens is being written by Craig Titley, who was previously an executive producer on the Marvel series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and wrote thirteen episodes of the show.

Heald will be directing the film, which is described as

a two-handed, globe-spanning adventure featuring ancient sites and artifacts and will involve the theories and questions raised by the docuseries.

If you’re not familiar with the Ancient Aliens show, it’s a

pseudo-documentary series that has been airing since 2009 and deals with pseudo-science and the idea that extraterrestrial beings visited Earth in ancient times, sometimes provoking cultures into thinking they were gods.

Ancient Aliens has run for more than 200 episodes at this point, and has spawned AlienCon, “a convention based around Ancient Astronaut Theorist discussions that has been attracting 50,000 visitors a year since 2016.”

Hurwitz, Schlossberg, and Heald are producing the film under their Counterbalance Entertainment banner. Jon Jashni, the former president of Legendary, is also producing. Jashni was partners with the Ancient Aliens series’ late executive producer Kevin Burns at Synthesis Entertainment.

A previous draft of Ancient Aliens had been written by Luke Ryan, who worked with the Cobra Kai team on Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle. In addition to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Titley also wrote the film See Spot Run, provided the story for 2002’s Scooby-Doo movie, provided the story for the 2003 version of Cheaper by the Dozen, wrote Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief, worked on Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and was writer and consulting producer on the TV show The Cape.
