Andy Serkis unsure how Alfred fits into Batman sequel

Andy Serkis confirmed that the Batman sequel was being written but has no idea how large the role of Alfred will be.

The highly anticipated sequel to last year’s Golden Schmoes (oh, and Oscar)-nominated The Batman has plenty of fans speculating on just about every aspect of the movie. Even though the sequel was confirmed last April, news has been relatively slim considering the scope and prominence. And like the die-hard fans, co-star Andy Serkis, who played Alfred Pennyworth in The Batman, also wants some answers.

In a recent interview, Andy Serkis shared the sentiment that he, too, is eagerly anticipating news on Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II, especially as it pertains to the character of Alfred. “I know [Reeves is] writing, at the moment. I’ve not had many discussions with him about it. I loved working with him on it. It was amazing to go from doing the Apes movies into that world. I think he just did such an incredible job. Like you say, it was a very fresh version. And working with Rob Pattinson was amazing. So, I know that the second one is being written, but that’s as far as I know. I don’t know how Alfred plays into that, at all. It’ll be exciting to find out, which I think I will do soon.” And so while The Batman: Part II is in the pre-production stage, it does seem we’ll be waiting quite some time for more news regarding the cast and plot.

Serkis’ iteration of Alfred Pennyworth–Bruce Wayne’s butler–was indeed a much-needed spin on the character. While Alfred does still provide a certain core and grounding for Wayne–Serkis previously said of his Batman involvement, “It’s very much about the emotional connection between Alfred and Bruce. That’s really at the center of it.”–the Andy Serkis’ take stands on its own, proving the right one for the tone of The Batman, just as Michael Gough and Michael Caine fit their respective movies.

The Batman: Part II comes to theaters on October 4th, 2025.

Do you hope Andy Serkis has a bigger role in The Batman: Part II? What would you like to see from the character? Where do you think he ranks with other portrayers? Let us know in the comments section below!
