Avengers: Endgame directors reveal Katherine Langford’s secret cut role

Katherine Langford, Avengers: Endgame

MAJOR SPOILERS for AVENGERS: ENDGAME. It was revealed late last year that Katherine Langford (13 Reasons Why) had joined the cast of AVENGERS: ENDGAME in a top-secret role, but now that the film has been released, you'll likely notice that Langford was nowhere to be seen. While speaking with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, AVENGERS: ENDGAME directors Joe and Anthony Russo spilled the beans on who Langford was playing and why her scene was cut from the film.

In the grand finale of AVENGERS: ENDGAME, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) sacrifices himself to defeat Thanos and his army. The original cut of the film had Stark being thrust into a metaphysical "way station" at this point, similar to what happened to Thanos (Josh Brolin) near the end of AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR. It was here where he encountered a teen-aged version of his daughter, Morgan. This was the role which Katherine Langford played. Joe Russo said, "There was an idea that we had that Tony was going to go into the metaphysical way station that Thanos goes in when he snapped his fingers. And that there was going to be a future version of his daughter in that way station… The intention was that his future daughter, because these films are dealing with magic, his future daughter forgave him and sort of gave him peace to go. And the idea felt resonant. But it was just too many ideas in an overly complicated movie." At the end of the day however, Anthony Russo explained that the scene was cut as it didn't resonate emotionally and confused test audiences.

What we realized about it was we didn’t feel an emotional association with the adult version of his daughter. So it wasn’t ringing to us and resonating with us on an emotional level.

There you have it. Perhaps we'll see this scene once AVENGERS: ENDGAME is released on home-media later this year. Be sure to check out a review from our own Chris Bumbray and let us know what YOU thought of the film as well!
