Barbarella IS Coming

What is going on with BARBARELLA? Last we heard Robert Rodriguez was out and chick flick director Robert Luketic was in. That still seems to be the case according to The Hollywood Reporter only now the project has a writer as well!

The filmmaking crew of director Robert Rodriguez, writers Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, and star Rose McGowan were once all geared up to go for Universal but then things fell apart when Rodriguez and the studio couldn’t agree on the shooting location. So now it looks like Luketic and writer Joe Gazzam are now tackling the project for original BARBARELLA producer Dino De Laurentiis and his wife Martha. No studio is attached.

Gazzam has no credits yet but does have a few things coming up including RIOT, CRYPTOZOO, STRAIGHT AND NARROW and the 21 JUMP STREET reboot. Wow… wherever this movie is going… I’m not liking it. I just can’t see the duo of Gazzam and Luketic bringing us an awesome BARBARELLA flick… but let’s hope they’ve got something I’m just not seeing. The movie follows a female mercenary who roams the universe of a distant future, undertaking missions that require fearlessness, ingenuity and sensuality. The titular character was played by Jane Fonda (pictured) in the 1968 version.

Word has it this new adaptation won’t be campy at all. It’ll focus on the action/adventure take on the story but will also keep the sexuality. Right now everyone is waiting on Gazzam’s script before any other steps are taken. There’s also no word on who’ll be playing the new Barbarella so that poses the burning question…. Who do you think it should be? I’ll toss out a name to start things up…. Kristen Bell perhaps?
