Black Adam producers on sequels, JSA spin-offs and more

Recently, we here at JoBlo had the chance to talk with the team behind DC’s Black Adam, which is set to kick off Dwayne Johnson’s reign in the DCEU as the titular anti-hero. Johnson has always been outspoken about how he hopes to be playing this character for a long time (perhaps even fighting the Man of Steel), and while speaking with producers Beau Flynn and Hiram Garcia, they made it clear that even if the star has many projects in the works, more Black Adam is a priority for all involved.

“This project and Black Adam in this world is something that he’s (Johnson) been working so hard to bring to life,” said Garcia. “And, and all of us, Beau (Flynn) and myself and Dany (Garcia), the other producer from Seven Bucks, and Dwayne, it’s been a lifelong mission to bring this to life. And now that we’re finally here… we have so many stories we want to tell in this space, and, you know, um, we always like to joke…. we have a saying that we call the “Moses Project”, where basically when the project’s ready, everything kind of parts and this rises up.

He adds: Black Adam is just one of those projects where, you know, he’s at a great place in his career where he’s very selective about what he wants to do, but he wants to tell many stories in this universe and in the DC universe and keep reprising this character. So I think the more we get ready, the more he’ll always make space so that we can make these movies and he can be in them.”

One other thing that’s notable about the film is that it teases many new additions to the DCEU, including Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman, Noah Centineo’s Atom Smasher and several more. When I asked whether there was a plan to spin any of these characters off, potentially even into a streaming arena, producer Beau Flynn seemed optimistic.

“We are confident, but we’re also realistic. And, Hiram (Garcia) and I have big aspirations for this world and these characters, and we are deep in all kinds of conversations with, you know, with Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Smasher, Cyclone, and more.”

He adds, “some of our peers as producers are a little thrown by the state of the movie business. It’s something that we’ve really embraced in terms of like the theatrical route, streaming route, the digital, whatever it may be. There’s so many opportunities now to get to our audience through distribution that it’s really exciting because then that gives us more of an opportunity for those spinoffs and sequels that you’re talking about. What’s great is these characters are so rich thar there are so many opportunities for us to explore with them. So this is just scratching the surface of what you see of the JSA in Black Adam.”

If definitely sounds like much more Black Adam and the JSA is on the way. Black Adam starts showing at early shows tonight and opens wide tomorrow. Are you psyched for more Black Adam? Let us know in the comments!
