Earlier this week, box office forecasters believed that The Devil Wears Prada 2 had a good chance of hitting $100 million this weekend. In my predictions, I threw a bit of cold water on that notion—as an opening that high seemed crazy to me considering how much older an audience the sequel is targeting. I predicted about $70 million, and it looks like I was relatively close, with Deadline forecasting it will hit anywhere from $75–80 million this weekend.
While some might consider that a disappointment given the hype, it’s still a slam-bang opening in my book. After all, the first one opened with a comparatively modest $27 million, and that was during an era when movies dominated the pop culture conversation a lot more than they do now. It reportedly cost about $100 million—not counting marketing—so it will probably need to do about $400 million or so worldwide to make a solid profit. But with an opening that high, it should hit that mark if word of mouth is good. Whatever the case, it will be huge on streaming.
Last week’s champ, Michael, is printing money, with it likely to hit $51 million this weekend, which would be a great hold—only being down 48% (low for a blockbuster). What’s even bigger news is how huge the movie has been internationally, with the worldwide gross already over $400 million in just a week. No wonder Lionsgate is keen to pump out the sequel ASAP.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie should be in third with $11.2 million, but Project Hail Mary is breathing down its neck with an estimated $9 million-plus. Despite having been in theaters for over six weeks, it’s still making bank, with the domestic haul already close to $320 million.
In terms of specialty releases, Neon’s Hokum, starring Adam Scott, seems to be off to a decent start, being on track for a $6 million weekend on 1,800 screens (check out our rave review HERE).
