Greta Gerwig’s upcoming Narnia movie for Netflix was slated for release this Thanksgiving, but the streaming service has pushed it back to February 12, 2027. This move comes with confirmation that the film will have a full wide theatrical release.

When Will Narnia be Released on Netflix?

Sneak previews in IMAX will begin on February 10, with the global wide release two days later, and the film will drop on Netflix on April 2, 2027. It’s a new world.

In a statement, an IMAX rep said, “From the outset, we got involved with Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew to support Greta Gerwig and see her vision realized to the fullest in IMAX. The film’s delay until 2027 creates an opportunity to give Narnia an expanded, wide release with a full theatrical window; we support Greta and Netflix in pursuing that opportunity and are pleased IMAX could help facilitate. We hope as many people in as many places as possible can experience what Greta is creating with this special film — particularly in its exclusive debut in IMAX, as it was meant to be seen.

What We Know About the Film

The film is an adaptation of The Magician’s Nephew. Although it was the sixth book published in the seven-novel series by C.S. Lewis, the story takes place 1000 years before the events of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Lewis later expressed his preference that readers should begin with The Magician’s Nephew when they read the series. The prequel deals with the creation of Narnia and the first humans to travel to the world.

The story concerns two children, Digory and Polly, who are transported to different worlds by magic rings created by Digory’s uncle. There, they accidentally awaken the evil White Witch. Daniel Craig is playing Uncle Andrew, with Emma Mackey as the White Witch, Carey Mulligan as Mabel Kirke, and David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell as Digory and Polly. Meryl Streep is also part of the cast, and it’s been rumoured that she will be voicing Aslan.

The last live-action adaptation of Lewis’ fantasy series started strong with The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. The first film grossed $745 million worldwide, but the sequel, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, made significantly less with $419 million. Another lackluster sequel, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, seemed to spell the end of the Narnia franchise.
