Brad Pitt has been as active behind the scenes as he has been starring in movies over the last few years. His Plan B production company has been behind Pitt’s films like THE TREE OF LIFE, KILLING THEM SOFTLY, and WORLD WAR Z as well as the movies KICK-ASS, EAT PRAY LOVE, and the upcoming 12 YEARS A SLAVE. While discussing his producing work with The Hollywood Reporter, Pitt shared some information on upcoming films he has in the works and the inevitable sequel to WORLD WAR Z.
Pitt’s frequent collaborator, David Fincher, has been long attached to adapt Charles Burns’ graphic novel BLACK HOLE. The project has been in development for years with seemingly no progress, but the article indicates that Pitt and Fincher are still working on it. BLACK HOLE tells the story of a group of teens in the Pacific Northwest who contract an STD that deforms them in monstrous and supernatural ways. A great comic and something that would fit with Fincher behind the camera, BLACK HOLE cannot happen soon enough. It remains to be seen how long we have to wait with Fincher getting started on GONE GIRL and then his long awaited 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA remake.
While the article also gives the status on a couple of other Plan B projects, the obvious question was about when to expect the sequel to WORLD WAR Z. Pitt had this to say:
Plan B also is developing a sequel to Z, which still is in its nascent stages, though director Marc Forster won’t be back. ‘We are talking about it,’ says Pitt. ‘We are going to investigate a script. We have a lot of ideas we will cull from. Nobody is writing just yet, but we are compiling our ideas.’”
While WORLD WAR Z did turn out to be a box office success, the tensions between Forster and Pitt are well documented and it was obvious the director would not be back under any circumstances. It also doesn’t sound like the project is very active at this point, so don’t hold your breath to see if they adapt Max Brooks‘ material any further for the sequel.
