Breaking Bad reunion: Bryan Cranston & Aaron Paul back for Better Call Saul

breaking bad reunion

As part of an awards panel hosted by Deadline, Better Call Saul co-creator Peter Gould confirmed what fans of the show have always assumed: a Breaking Bad reunion is in the cards. That’s right folks, Bryan Cranston’s Walter White and Aaron Paul’s Jesse Pinkman will be back for the final season. “They’re coming back,” said Gould, although he didn’t specify how prominent the roles would be. The news was later confirmed on the show’s Twitter account:

While it’s unlikely Cranston and Paul will contribute more than a cameo, both actors have maintained close ties with the Breaking Bad universe, so a return always seemed to be in the cards. Given that Walter White died in the final episode of Breaking Bad, one could logically assume we’ll be seeing Walter and Jesse at the start of their criminal careers, having caught up with Bob Odenkirk’s Saul Goodman in season two. At this point, Saul (aka Jimmy McGill) was already well situated in his career as a criminal mouthpiece, which is a point he hasn’t quite reached yet on Better Call Saul.

Fans will note that this isn’t the first time Cranston and Paul have reprised their roles, with Paul leading Netflix’s El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie back in 2019. Cranston showed up in that one during an extended flashback sequence. Better Call Saul’s thirteen-episode final season has been split in two, with the first half making its debut on April 18th. The second half premieres in July. The last season is set to be a rough one, with Odenkirk himself promising that the season is “bloody and painful.” As a fan of the show, my fingers are crossed that Rhea Seehorn’s Kim doesn’t have a bad end – I’d love to see that character continue in another Breaking Bad spin-off.
