Cars spin-off Planes gets a new trailer featuring the voice of Dane Cook

Last Updated on August 5, 2021

I despise the Disney-Pixar CARS franchise. Those little die cast cars have taken over my home. My kids must have at least 75 Lightning McQueen toys that are all slightly different in ways I could never determine. While both CARS movies are my least favorite Pixar movies, they do have some charm (until you have been forced to watch them thousands of times). While every other sequel in Pixar’s filmography seems to be getting the big screen treatment, they have handed the reigns over to Disney’s animation studios to continue the CARS series.

We got the first teaser for PLANES over a year ago featuring the voice of Jon Cryer as Dusty the plane, a bumbling goofball who somehow gets embroiled in the world of fighter jets. Back then, PLANES was a direct to DVD project. Well, Disney decided to give the film a theatrical run this summer and dropped Cryer from the cast, adding Dane Cook as Dusty, John Lasseter was the director of both CARS films and serves as producer on PLANES.

Here’s the new plot synopsis:

From high above the world of ‘Cars’ flies ‘Planes’, Disney’s upcoming animated action-packed comedic adventure starring Dusty, a big-hearted, fast-flying crop duster who dreams of competing in the most exhilarating around-the-world air race in history. There’s only a couple of not-so-small problems, Dusty is not exactly built for racing and he also happens to be afraid of heights. Despite his fear and with encouragement from his mentor, a naval aviator named Skipper, Dusty narrowly qualifies for the big competition. Dusty’s sportsmanship and speed begin to rattle the defending champ of the race circuit, Ripslinger, who will stop at nothing to see Dusty fail. When disaster strikes during the climax of the final race, Dusty’s courage is put to the ultimate test. With the support of friends old and new, Dusty reaches heights he never dreamed possible and in the process, gives a spellbound world the inspiration to soar.

Joining Dane Cook is a huge cast that includes Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, John Cleese, Colin Cowherd, Cedric the Entertainer, Gabriel Iglesias, Sinbad, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, and Brent Musburger. Here’s the new trailer:

I am not quite sure how good this movie is going to be, but the animation looks on par with the CARS films. The cast seems pretty solid as well, so I should be able to tolerate taking my kids to see this when it opens in theaters (in 3D) on August 9, 2013.
