Chucky: Don Mancini has an inexhaustible supply of TV spin-off and film sequel ideas

After seven feature films, the Child’s Play / Chucky franchise moved to television. And while season 2 of the Chucky TV show is currently airing on Syfy and USA Network (you can read our review HERE), franchise creator Don Mancini has made it clear that he’s still interested in making more feature film sequels even while the series is on TV. He has ideas for spin-offs as well – in fact, he says he has an inexhaustible supply of ideas for future stories about Chucky and his supporting cast!

Speaking with TV Insider, Mancini said, “I hope to be able to continue to do the TV show for as long as people want to see it because I really love the format. And I think it’s really reinvigorated the franchise and brought up a lot of new energy and life and blood and fresh meat! So I would like to do that. But at the same time, I would also like to do more movies, because I love movies, too. And I think, you know, I think they’re not mutually exclusive. I think they can exist, you know, just as Marvel characters can potentially exist in both media. So that’s my hope. But it’s ultimately down to the fans and what they want to see, but so far, so good. And like feel what I’ve heard just in advance of people who have seen the first few episodes (of season 2) like yourselves, it seems like people are enjoying it. So if you’re enjoying it, tell people.

USA Insider reports that Mancini had more to say about his franchise hopes at the New York Comic Con: “I want to do both (movies and the TV show). That’s my biggest dream is to be able to have it be like Marvel. To have the television series going on and the movies happening, maybe other TV spinoffs happening. I mean who wouldn’t want that? But, that’s all up to you guys. Please watch the show so [Chucky] can take over our lives even more! I have 35 years’ worth of ideas. I spend a very unhealthy amount of my life thinking about Chucky. I have an inexhaustible supply of ideas for the Chucky universe if you guys ask for it.

A follow-up to all of the Child’s Play movies (remake excluded), Chucky picks up where Cult of Chucky left off. Don Mancini, who has written every film in the franchise (except that remake) and directed a few of them, developed Chucky with producer David Kirschner. Mancini and Kirschner are executive producing Chucky with Harley Peyton, Alex Hedlund, and Nick Antosca. The show’s synopsis:

After a vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale, an idyllic American town is thrown into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies and allies from Chucky’s past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings, as well as the demon doll’s untold origins as a seemingly ordinary child who somehow became this notorious monster.

Chucky, which aired on the NBCUniveral cable networks Syfy and USA, reached 11.6 million viewers across all platforms during the first season.

What do you think of Mancini’s franchise aspirations? Do you want to see a whole lot more of Chucky? More seasons of the TV series? More movies? Spin-offs? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
