Coup de Chance trailer: Woody Allen’s 50th film is a French thriller

The 50th movie from controversial filmmaker Woody Allen is a thriller that was shot in French and will be making its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, which is set to run from August 30th through September 9th. The film is called Coup de Chance (or Stroke of Luck), and an English-subtitled trailer can be seen in the embed above.

Allen has described Coup de Chance as a “poisonous romantic thriller” and spiritual successor to his popular 2005 psychological thriller Match Point. This one has the following synopsis: Fanny and Jean have everything of the ideal couple: fulfilled in their professional life, they live in a magnificent apartment in the beautiful districts of Paris and seem to be in love as on the first day. But when Fanny crosses, by chance, Alain, a former high school friend, she is immediately capsized. They see each other again very quickly and get closer and closer.

At one point, it was believed that Coup de Chance might be the last film from Allen. After all, he will be turning 88 later this year. But Allen shot down those rumors, saying he has no intention of retiring.

While support for Allen has cratered in the United States, he remains popular in France, where Coup de Chance will be receiving a theatrical release on September 27th.

Addressing the fact that the Venice International Film Festival will be hosting multiple controversial filmmakers this year (Allen, Luc Besson, and Roman Polanski), the festival artistic director Alberto Barbera said, “Luc Besson has been recently fully cleared of any accusations. Woody Allen went under legal scrutiny twice at the end of the ’90s and was absolved. With them, I don’t see where the issue is. In Polanski’s case, it’s paradoxical. It’s been 60 years. Polanski has admitted his responsibility. He’s asked to be forgiven. He’s been forgiven by the victim. The victim has asked for the issue to be put to rest. I think that to keep beating on Polanski means seeking a scapegoat for other situations that would deserve more attention. That aside, there is a cultural debate underway about Polanski with less rigid positions being taken.”
