Crystal Lake is getting ready to bring the Friday the 13th franchise back to Camp Crystal Lake, and a new Entertainment Weekly interview with Linda Cardellini and creator Brad Caleb Kane has revealed some intriguing details about the Peacock prequel. The series will explore Pamela Voorhees’ relationship with her son Jason, show Jason’s evolution from bullied child to the monster fans know, and deliver what the show’s effects team describes as “level 10” gore.

EW has also published a new batch of images from Crystal Lake, adding to the anticipation for the eight-episode series ahead of its October 15 premiere on Peacock.

Crystal Lake Will Explore Pamela and Jason’s Relationship

Cardellini plays Pamela Voorhees in Crystal Lake, taking on the role originated by Betsy Palmer in the 1980 original Friday the 13th. But while the series is centered on Pamela, Kane has made it clear that Jason is an important part of the story.

The prequel begins with the drowning of Jason, who is portrayed as a bullied young boy with hydrocephalus. The series will then explore Pamela’s psychological descent as she deals with the loss of her son and eventually becomes the killer fans encountered in Friday the 13th.

Kane told EW wanted to explore the mother-and-son relationship “at a cellular level.” “We wanted to see the evolution of how he went from a boy with differences, a boy who’s othered and a boy who does not fit in with the kids at Camp Crystal Lake, to a monster,” Kane says.

Jason Voorhees Will Appear Without His Famous Hockey Mask

Jason will appear in Crystal Lake, but fans shouldn’t expect to see him wearing his iconic hockey mask. Kane has previously been clear that the mask won’t be part of the series, which makes sense considering that Crystal Lake takes place before the events of the original movies.

Callum Vinson plays young Jason, and Kane says the production used “pounds and pounds of makeup” for the character’s transformation. Vinson apparently had a little more fun with the Jason iconography when the cameras weren’t rolling. The young actor says Kane would give him a machete, while the makeup team would give him the mask, allowing him to walk around and chase people with it.

Linda Cardellini Isn’t Trying to Imitate Betsy Palmer

Taking over the role of Pamela Voorhees comes with some pressure. Betsy Palmer’s performance as Jason’s mother remains one of the most memorable villain reveals in horror history. Cardellini isn’t attempting to imitate Palmer, however. She describes her approach as “more an homage than mimicry.”

The production did incorporate some familiar Pamela Voorhees iconography, including the blue sweater. Cardellini considered wearing a hairstyle similar to Palmer’s, but ultimately decided that it wouldn’t make sense for a character living in the 1970s to already have the same look Palmer had in the 1980 film.

The Crystal Lake version of Pamela has more life to explore before she becomes the killer of Friday the 13th. As Cardellini puts it, she’s a mother, she’s grieving, she’s filled with rage, she’s a singer, and she has her own feelings and relationships within the town.

Crystal Lake Is Going for “Level 10” Gore

Of course, this is still Friday the 13th. Anyone worried that Crystal Lake might forget the franchise’s slasher roots can apparently relax. The production’s effects team says the series is going all the way with its gore. Effects artist Dave Presto says he asked Kane whether the show would go “full on, like level 10 gore.” The answer was yes.

Cardellini, for her part, says the fake blood was “sticky,” and admits that while she was happy those scenes were captured on film, she was also happy when they were finished.

Brad Caleb Kane Describes Crystal Lake as a Pop Culture “Mixtape”

Kane isn’t approaching Crystal Lake as though the only influences should be previous Friday the 13th movies. He describes the series as something of a “mixtape” of American pop culture from the 1970s and 1980s. The show incorporates elements inspired by conspiracy thrillers, television specials, and other genre influences from the era.

That approach extends to the supporting characters. Cameron Scoggins plays Dorf, the police officer originally portrayed by Ron Millkie in Friday the 13th, while William Catlett plays Police Chief Levon Brooks. The series expands characters and storylines that weren’t part of the original movie while still connecting them to the world fans know.

Kane’s is less about recreating Friday the 13th scene-for-scene and more about building out the world surrounding Camp Crystal Lake. That includes Jason, Pamela, the town, the camp, and the people whose lives become tangled up in the Voorhees family’s tragedy.

When Does Crystal Lake Premiere?

All eight episodes of Crystal Lake season 1 will premiere on Peacock on October 15, 2026.

Linda Cardellini stars as Pamela Voorhees, with Callum Vinson as young Jason. The cast also includes William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, and Gwendolyn Sundstrom. Brad Caleb Kane, who previously worked on It: Welcome to Derry, serves as creator, writer, and showrunner.

The series is produced by Peacock and A24 and takes place years before the events of the original Friday the 13th. With Cardellini bringing her own interpretation to Pamela, Jason’s evolution forming a major part of the story, and the effects team promising “level 10” gore, Crystal Lake certainly seems intent on giving fans plenty to talk about when it finally opens the gates to Camp Crystal Lake. And these new EW images are another reminder that the wait is almost over.
