Cube remake: Lionsgate is seeking pitches for a new take on sci-fi thriller

Seven years have gone by since it was announced that Prometheus screenwriter Jon Spaihts was working with Roy Lee to produce a reboot of the very cool 1997 sci-fi thriller Cube (which you can watch at THIS LINK) for Lionsgate, with Saman Kesh (Doors) attached to direct from a script by Philip Gawthorne. The following year, Spaihts told us the project was “resting right now as we look for a new creative direction”. Since all this time has passed without a new Cube going into production, it’s clear they were never able to find a creative direction they wanted to bring to the screen. Now our friends at Bloody Disgusting are reporting that Lionsgate has circled back around to the idea of making another Cube. They hear “Lionsgate is starting from scratch and taking fresh pitches on a brand new Cube.”

Directed by Vincenzo Natali from a screenplay he wrote with André Bijelic and Graeme Manson, the original Cube was made on a budget of $350,000 and has the following synopsis:

Without remembering how they got there, several strangers awaken in a prison of cubic cells, some of them booby-trapped. There’s onetime cop Quentin, scientist Holloway, young math genius Leaven, master of escapes Rennes, autistic savant Kazan, and architect Worth, who might have more information on the maze than he lets on. The prisoners must use their combined skills if they are to escape.

The film stars Maurice Dean Wint, Nicky Guadagni, Nicole de Boer, Wayne Robson, Andrew Miller, and David Hewlett.

Cube was followed by a sequel, Cube 2: Hypercube, in 2002, and a prequel, Cube Zero, in 2004. Last year, a Japanese remake of Cube was released, and you can check out the trailers for that one at the top and bottom of this article.

I love the original Cube, but the attempts to turn the idea into a franchise have never worked for me. So I can’t say I’m very interested in seeing what comes out of Lionsgate’s new search for Cube pitches. Do you want to see more Cube? Let us know by leaving a comment below.
