As Disney continues to shop for properties to bring to their upcoming online streaming subscription service, Disney+, we're now getting word from Deadline Hollywood that the House of Mouse has tapped TOLKIEN scribe David Gleeson to adapt Polly Shulman’s young adult book series The Grimm Legacy. With Disney+ readying a late 2019 launch of the competitive streamer, it's been said that the studio is considering Shulman's magical universe for a potential franchise.
Over the course of three novels (The Grimm Legacy, The Wells Bequest, and The Poe Estate) which are set in a New York Circulating Material Repository, Shulman's YA saga follows a group of teens who work at an old-style lending library that lends magical items to people from the Grimm collection.
I've not read the novels myself, but I can only imagine what manner of mysterious objects have come into the library's possession throughout the years. Could the Big Bad Wolf's pelt be up for grabs? The Bridegroom's severed finger? The voice of the Nixie of Millpond? The possibilities are endless, my friends, and with three novels to pull from, THE GRIMM LEGACY film project has the potential to explore much of the famed Grimmverse.
While little else is known about THE GRIMM LEGACY project at this time, I'll take this time to remind you that TOLKIEN, a biographical drama starring Nicholas Hoult, Lily Collins, and Mimi Keene that explores the formative years of the orphaned Lord of the Rings author opens in theaters on May 10th.
