Both critically and commercially, GREEN LANTERN was not the success that Warner Bros. was looking for. But despite poor reviews (it’s currently ranked at 26% on Rotten Tomatoes) and disappointing box-office, Warner Bros. says they’re still moving ahead with a GREEN LANTERN sequel.
Sources told the Hollywood Reporter that WB is indeed disappointed with the film but still believes in its validity as a franchise and is actively planning a second film. Many of the seeds for a GREEN LANTERN 2 were planted in the original including Sinestro and Carol Ferris (Star Sapphire).
I think the soft box-office numbers could be overlooked if the movie were…any good. X-MEN: FIRST CLASS is a good example. it didn’t exactly light up the ticket sales in a huge way (when all is said and done, it will likely have similar numbers to LANTERN), but it was a very good film and left audiences interested in the characters and their future in the franchise. I’m not sure there are many people left who are interested in the future of the GREEN LANTERN franchise after sitting through the first film.
And, of course, there’s the notion that the announcement of “planning” a sequel is just a PR move announced to help take the negative spin off the first film, which is still in theaters. But assuming the studio was going ahead with a sequel, would you be interested? Where would you want to see the film go?
