Devil Beneath: Australian creature feature Red Billabong is finally coming to North America

Among the first batch of projects I wrote about when I first joined Arrow in the Head back in 2015 was an Australian creature feature called Red Billabong, which was described as being like “an Australian Jurassic Park“. The movie was released in its home country back in 2016, but never managed to make its way over to the U.S. But its North American fortunes are changing now, as the film has been acquired by Vertical Entertainment and they’re planning to give it a digital release in North America on January 13th. Red Billabong has been re-edited, re-mixed, re-scored, and retitled for this new release. It’s now going by the title Devil Beneath.

A press release notes that Devil Beneath has nothing to do with The Devil Below, another movie Vertical released last year.

Luke Sparke made his feature writing and directorial debut with this action thriller creature feature, which tells the story of two estranged brothers and their friends, who are pulled into a world of mystery and lies when their grandfather’s property is passed into their hands. As both brothers are pulled apart by different choices, one thing is clear – something sinister is going on. As people go missing the brothers learn secrets that will change their life forever – but what is out there? A myth? A hoax? Or could it really be… real?

Devil Beneath stars Dan Ewing, Tim Pocock, Jessica Green, Sophie Don, Ben Chisholm, Alex Becconsall, Damien Bryson, Philippe Deseck, Col Elliott, Gregory J. Fryer, Yutaka Izumihara, Emily Joy, Selina Kadell, John Reynolds, John Sparke, James Straiton, and Felix Williamson.

Since making Devil Beneath, Luke Sparke has directed the sci-fi action film Occupation and its follow-up Occupation: Rainfall. I was intrigued by Red Billabong when I wrote about it back in 2015 and 2016 and was interested in seeing the movie, so I’m glad to hear I’m finally going to have the chance to check it out next year.
