Don’t Breathe 2 Interview: Fede Alvarez & Rodo Sayagues

Last Updated on August 20, 2021

As I mentioned when I posted my Stephen Lang Don’t Breathe 2 interview, this is an unusual horror sequel. Imagine taking a movie like Friday the 13th and making Jason the protagonist. That’s essentially what new director Rodo Sayagues has done with Don’t Breathe 2, and the effect is likely to be controversial among horror fans.

It’s a bold approach for a sequel and one that I was happy to talk about with Sayagues, who’s joined here by the original film’s director, Fede Alvarez, who co-wrote and produced the film. In our exclusive interview, the two discussed swapping up the genres and daring you to empathize with the Boogeyman, or in this case “The Blind Man,” who’s quickly becoming a horror legend in his own right.

The two are also behind the upcoming Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequel, with them both having producer credits on the film, which David Blue Garcia directs. Alvarez seemed particularly excited for the film’s eventual release, confirming that the movie is wrapped, with recent reports suggesting the test screenings for it have been off the charts.

Indeed, Alvarez and Sayagues seem to be in it for the long haul as far as making horror flicks go. You can see for yourself when Don’t Breathe 2 opens in theaters (appropriately enough) on Friday the 13th.
