Paramount Pictures will be giving the feature film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves a theatrical release on March 31st – but while we wait to see how that film turns out, Paramount has already gone ahead and expanded their Dungeons & Dragons franchise. Deadline reports that the Paramount+ streaming service has given an eight-episode, straight-to-series order to a live-action Dungeons & Dragons TV series!

Red Notice writer/director Rawson Marshall Thurber has written the script for the pilot episode, which he will also be directing. The Dungeons & Dragons TV series will be a co-production between eOne and Paramount Pictures.

According to Deadline, “Adapting Dungeons & Dragons for television has been a major focus for eOne under President of Global Television Michael Lombardo following the company’s 2019 acquisition by Hasbro. The live-action series has been tipped to be the studio’s largest-scope TV project ever, potentially launching a Dungeons & Dragons universe spanning multiple scripted and unscripted shows.

Gabriel Marano, eOne’s EVP Scripted Television, will be overseeing the series.

Deadline would also like to remind us that Dungeons & Dragons is a fantasy role-playing game franchise. Featuring humans, elves, orcs and other fantastical creatures engaging in wars, treasure hunts and campaigns, the D&D game, one of Hasbro’s key franchise brands hailing from Wizards of the Coast, is overseen by a host, known as the Dungeon Master, and employs a signature multisided dice. More than 50 million fans have played D&D since it was first launched 49 years ago, including videogames and livestream entertainment on Twitch and YouTube.

In addition to working on this show, Thurber is also writing two Red Notice sequels and will be directing a feature adaptation of the animated series Voltron for Amazon. Thurber is writing the Voltron movie with Ellen Shanman and producing it with Todd Lieberman.

I’m not very familiar with Dungeons & Dragons myself. In fact, most of what I know about the game comes from what characters have said on Stranger Things. Here’s an image from Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves:
