Edgar Wright’s co-writer comments on Last Night in Soho

One of the films I'm most looking forward to in 2020 is LAST NIGHT IN SOHO, director Edgar Wright's "straight-up psychological horror thriller" that he has said was influenced by the likes of DON'T LOOK NOW and REPULSION. We don't know a whole lot about the movie at this point, but it seems to be some kind of horrific take on time travel.

Thomasin McKenzie and Anya Taylor-Joy star as characters named Eloise and Sandy, and much of the film is said to take place in

the London of the Swinging Sixties; a time period with which Eloise is obsessed and, through a mysterious connection with Sandy, gets to experience.

Wright has told Empire,

There’s something I have in common with the lead character in that I’m afflicted with nostalgia for a decade I didn’t live in. You think about ‘60s London – what would that be like? Imagine if you knew everything you knew now, and went back. I’m taking a premise whereby you have a character who, in a sort of abstract way, gets to travel in time. And the reality of the decade is maybe not what she imagines. It has an element of ‘be careful what you wish for’."

Wright wrote the screenplay with Krysty Wilson-Cairns, who is currently getting a lot of press because she co-wrote Sam Mendes' Golden Globe-winning war film 1917. While speaking with Collider about 1917, Wilson-Cairns was asked how LAST NIGHT IN SOHO will be different from Wright's previous films, which have primarily been comedies. She answered,

It’s very much a kind of thriller. It’s very much a psychological thriller. It’s a bit like DON'T LOOK NOW and that kind of thing, but it also still feels like an Edgar Wright movie. It still has everything that you want for an Edgar Wright movie in it because his film, do you know what I mean? So I would urge everyone who likes Edgar Wright to go and see this film. It’s slightly different from the norm, but is still an Edgar movie."

Wilson-Cairns also said that collaborating with Wright was a very pleasant experience, as he's fun, unbelievably brilliant, and very generous.

He’s just so on it. The days involved talking about the story, having a good laugh, listening to music, eating a lot. And so I’d do that every day for the rest of my life if Edgar would let me. He’s a bit of a genius as well, which doesn’t hurt. So yes, I could only say wonderful things about Edgar and about the process of working with him."

LAST NIGHT IN SOHO is set to reach theatres on September 25, 2020

McKenzie and Taylor-Joy's co-stars include Matt Smith, Michael Ajao, Synnøve Karlsen, Diana Rigg, Terence Stamp, and Rita Tushingham. Wright produced the film with Nira Park and Working Title's Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
