Emmy Awards 2022 nominations: TV fan-favorites like Euphoria, Ted Lasso, Squid Game, & more score big

The nominations have been unveiled for the 74th Emmy Awards in 2022, and TV fan-favorites like Euphoria, Ted Lasso, Squid Game, Only Murders in the Building, and more scored big nods.

The nominations were announced by Curb Your Enthusiasm actor JB Smoove and Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Melissa Fumero. They were joined by Television Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma to help reveal the nominations, which saw many buzzworthy shows earning nods.

Euphoria scored an Outstanding Drama Series nomination, a first for the HBO hit, while Zendaya becomes the youngest two-time Emmy acting nominee for her role on the show. Currently 25, the actress previously set the record with her first win for the show back in 2020, making her the youngest to win in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category. Zendaya is also the youngest producing nominee with the show’s nomination for Outstanding Drama Series.

Succession was the most recognized series overall with 25 nominations, including Outstanding Drama Series, while The White Lotus was the most acknowledged limited series with 20 nominations. Some might call into question it being a limited series since it’s getting a second season, but it was submitted as such before the season two renewal.

Let’s give it up for network TV as the incredibly hilarious Abbott Elementary scored an Outstanding Comedy Series nomination, and the series star and creator, Quinta Brunson, also earned a nomination for Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series. If you haven’t started watching Abbott Elementary, do yourself a favor and get familiar because it’s one of the funniest shows on TV right now.

Another comedy worth noting is Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, recently picked up for season three by the streamer. The show earned an Outstanding Comedy Series nomination, while Steve Martin and Martin Short both earned nominations in the Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for their roles. Selena Gomez, who more than holds her own alongside those comedic heavyweights, was snubbed in the Lead Actress in a Comedy category, but as an executive producer on the show, the 29-year-old is now the second Latina that has ever been among the producing nominees in the 74-year history of the Emmys. The first was Salma Hayek back in 2007 for Ugly Betty.

Ted Lasso scored 20 nominations total as it matched its record-breaking 2021 Emmy nominations. That was the most ever for a freshman comedy in TV history, and the Apple TV+ series came back to show that was no fluke. The show was nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, and while it could be an early frontrunner, it is facing some stiff competition from other favorites.

Squid Game became the first non-English language show to get a nomination for Outstanding Drama Series, and it scored an acting nomination for Lee Jung-Jae for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. Netflix is behind Squid Game, and they were behind some other big nominees as well. They also saw Stranger Things and Ozark land Outstanding Drama Series nominations, while Jason Bateman and Laura Linney represented Ozark in the Lead Actor and Actress Drama Series category. Netflix also saw their Inventing Anna limited series score in that category, while Julia Garner also received a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Or Anthology Series or Movie for her role in the fan-favorite hit.

Now that the nominations are out, the 2022 Emmy Awards are set to broadcast live on Monday, September 12, 2022, at 8:00 PM EDT/5:00 PM PDT on NBC and will stream live for the first time on Peacock.
