The long-awaited season 2 premiere of Euphoria aired on Sunday and it looks like its long absence was felt by the fans because they returned to the series in a big way.

Per HBO, via “Deadline“, the season 2 premiere of Euphoria drew 2.4 million viewers across all of its platforms Sunday night and it had the strongest digital premiere performance of any HBO episode on HBO Max since the streamer’s launch.

HBO also stated that the season 2 debut scored more than nine times higher than its season 1 premiere in digital viewing, which was released in June 2019 via HBO Go and HBO Now. The network did not provide the numbers for its live viewing but the premiere ranked as the No.1 asset on HBO Max on Sunday. This claim was backed up by a series of tweets saying that the HBO Max app has been crashing around 9:00 PM when the premiere was made available to the public.

Season 2 of Euphoria is currently 71% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes while the audience score is even higher at 94%, indicating the target audience is really enjoying season 2 so far. Euphoria is a look at life for a group of high school students as they grapple with issues of drugs, sex, and violence. It’s loosely based on the Israeli series of the same name and creator Sam Levinson based the series on his own experiences as a teenager, including his struggles with depression, anxiety, and drug addiction. While some critics were critical of the show’s depiction of teenage drug use, sex, and violence, most of them praised the show for its honest performances, visual style, and its unflinching portrayal of a subject matter involving teens that most would ignore or sugarcoat. Zendaya, who leads the series, took home the Best Actress in a Drama Series Emmy for her gripping portrayal of Rue Bennett on the show.
