Everything We Know About Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny

The first trailer for the next Indiana Jones movie has finally arrived. Earlier in the year, Harrison Ford dropped by the D23 convention to talk about the upcoming film and showed a quick teaser. Since then, fans have wanted to know more about the movie. With the trailer, we finally have some insights into what the film will be about. What do we know about Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny?

Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny

No Spielberg

So far, the film in the franchise has been directed by Steven Spielberg. This is not going to be the case with the new film. He was originally supposed to direct the film, but after numerous delays with the script and what direction the film should go, he decided to step back as director.

James Mangold was originally supposed to direct the Boba Fett movie, which got put on hold after the problems with Solo: A Star Wars Movie. Lucasfilm then brought him on to direct the new Indiana Jones film since his schedule opened up. He won’t be on his own, though. Spielberg stayed on as a producer and had to have been invaluable to have on set.

Sallah Returns

We haven’t seen John Rhys-Davies in the franchise since Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade. He is set to make his return in the new film and gets a big part in the new trailer. Sallah laments that he misses the adventures that they had in the desert. Hopefully, we’ll see him and Indy cross some dunes once again as the search for the Dial Of Destiny begins.

De-aging Indiana

With legacy sequels being so popular, we have seen many studios turn to digital de-aging to bring back characters to the way fans remember them. This film will be no different. It was confirmed in Empire Magazine that Indiana would be getting some work done during some flashback scenes of the movie. This may worry some fans, but Ford has assured them that it has been done really well. He said, “This is the first time I’ve seen it where I believe it.”

Nazis Are Back

One of the biggest enemy of Indiana Jones is the Nazis. They have been a thorn in his side at almost every turn, and as Jones once said, “I hate these guys.” In the new trailer, we see that he will be crossing paths with the Nazis again. The new film’s opening will be a flashback to one of his adventures during World War II. This is where the de-aged Indy will come in. From the looks of it, this time will be on top of a moving train. Should be a fun sequence.

Magic

As we have all seen, Indiana Jones has had a lot of weird run-ins with the supernatural throughout his career. He was present when the Ark Of The Covenant was found. However, he didn’t open his eyes to see the spirits swirling around and melting the faces off of Nazis. He encountered a religious cult that would pull the hearts out of sacrifices while it was still beating. Once, he encountered the ghost of a knight, who told him to pick the Holy Grail. After his father drank from it, his bullet wound healed itself. He even encountered aliens.

After all that, he still says he doesn’t believe in magic. We may not know what the Dial Of Destiny does, but you can know that magic will somehow be involved. Whether it’s real magic or the kind of mystical art that is really just science, we will have to wait and see. One thing the franchise hasn’t dealt with is time travel. Maybe old Indy will come face to face with his de-aged self.

Cast

While no other returning characters outside of Sallah seem to be making an appearance, the cast is stacked with familiar faces that fans will be excited to see. Phoebe Waller-Bridge will be playing Helena, his goddaughter. Mads Mikkelsen is playing Voller, who is expected to be the main villain this time around. Antonio Banderas and Toby Jones round out the cast, although their characters haven’t been revealed yet outside of a few quick shots in the trailer. how they will play into Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny remains to be seen.

John Williams Returns

The famous composer has returned to score the film. He even played a piece called Helena’s Theme at a concert at the Hollywood Bowl back in September. It’s great to have him back for the film, as all of his music for all the films has become iconic. He has stated that this is officially the last film he will work on as he plans to retire once the film has been released.

Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny

No New Indy

Fans have been worried that, eventually, the character of Indiana Jones will be handed to a different actor. Rumors have swirled that performers like Chris Pratt and Bradley Cooper would take over as a younger Indy in a new set of films. The newest ideas have been that the franchise would continue with a digitally de-aged Harrison Ford in new movies without the actor actually working on them. Ford has denied this is going forward, stating, “When I’m gone, he’s gone.”

There have even been rumors that Phoebe Waller-Bridge would even take over the franchise after this installment. James Mangold has said he is not replacing Indy in the franchise with her character. Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy has put all the rumors to rest, saying they would never make an Indiana Jones movie without Harrison Ford. Phew.

Indiana Jones Dial of Destiny

One Last Ride

While they may not be replacing Ford in the series, he has said that this is his last turn as the character. The film will come out just two weeks before his 81st birthday. He got emotional at the D23 Convention when stating that this was the last time he would put on the classic fedora. Fans hope this will be a fitting film to end his legacy with the character after the disappointment of Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull.
