Earlier this year, it was announced that Jon Watts, director of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far from Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, is producing Final Destination 6, which is set up at New Line Cinema and will be released through the HBO Max streaming service. We’ve been anxiously waiting to hear more news on this sequel for about six months now, and thankfully Jeffrey Reddick – who wrote the initial screenplay for the original Final Destination and contributed to Final Destination 2 – has given some information in a couple new interviews. Reddick couldn’t give any specific details, but it’s good to hear anything positive about Final Destination 6 at this point.

Speaking with Dread Central (with thanks to ComicBook.com for the transcript), Reddick said,

The good thing is (franchise producer) Craig Perry, who I call ‘the godfather of the project’, he’s always kept me in the loop of what’s going on. And I did actually speak to the screenwriters… they were very curious… they wanted to talk to me and just kind of get some insights into what I thought was crucial to the Final Destination franchise and some ideas and stuff like that. Yeah, I had a very wonderful conversation with them. I’m really excited with the story that I can’t tell you about. I will say that it’s not just going to be another kind of ‘we set up a group of people, they cheat death, and then just death gets them.’ And there’s one wrinkle that we kind of added to every movie to kind of like change it up a little bit. This one is a true Final Destination movie, but it doesn’t follow that kind of formula that we’ve kind of established… I think I can say that much.”

Reddick said something similar during an interview with Slasher Radio. After confirming that he has talked to the writers of Final Destination 6, he added,

It’s very much still a Final Destination movie. It’s not a requel, it’s not anything crazy, but it’s not your typical ‘have an accident, Death starts knocking off the survivors’. It’s different than that. That’s all I can say. But it’s very much a Final Destination movie and I think it’s a really, really smart way… I’m really excited about it.”

Lori Evans Taylor is writing the script with Guy Busick, co-writer of the new Scream movies, and they’re working from a story and treatment that was written by Watts. Watts is producing the sequel alongside Dianne McGunigle, Sheila Hanahan Taylor, and Final Destination franchise producer Craig Perry. Watts had this to say about the project:

Both Dianne and I have been massive fans of Final Destination from the very beginning. So to be able to have a hand in crafting a new story with the original team and New Line is going to be both fun and exciting.”

Perry added:

Jon and Dianne’s passion for the series is only matched by how much fun they are to work with. Sheila and I couldn’t be more excited to have their creative energy driving this latest installment in the Final Destination franchise with New Line. With Guy and Lori’s inspired execution of Jon’s original idea, we have a movie that audiences are gonna love.”
