Final Destination 6: Lori Evans Taylor is now writing the script

The press release sent out to announce that STXfilms has acquired the worldwide rights to writer/director Lori Evans Taylor’s feature debut Bed Rest has unexpectedly revealed some news about the Final Destination franchise, mentioning that Evans Taylor “is currently writing Final Destination 6“.

Last we heard about the next Final Destination movie, genre regulars Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan were working on the script – but almost three years have gone by since it was announced that New Line Cinema had hired them for the project. There’s been a frustrating lack of news since then, although Jeffrey Reddick (who wrote the initial screenplay for the first Final Destination and returned to work on Final Destination 2) did assure fans that, while the development process was disrupted by the pandemic, the project was still in the works. Now it looks like Final Destination 6 is moving forward again, but without Melton and Dunstan.

Franchise producer Craig Perry previously gave some hints about the Final Destination 6 they were working on, saying

We’re toying with having it take place in the world of first responders: EMTs, firemen, and police. These people deal with death on the front lines every day and make choices that can cause people to live or die. We rely on their good judgment, expertise, and calm demeanor. So why not put those people in the nightmare situation where every choice can bring about life and death – but now for themselves?”

Perry also teased one of the deaths we might see in the new film:

I don’t think anybody will look at a revolving door in the same way again…”

It’s not known if the script Evans Taylor is writing has anything to do with first responders or revolving doors. I hope we’ll be hearing a lot more about this soon, because I desperately want to see a Final Destination 6. Final Destination is my favorite horror franchise of the 2000s and it’s been way too long (ten years now) since the last one was released.
