It's just a couple days shy of fourteen months since the season finale of The X-Files' six episode revival aired on Fox, and just days ago it was still a complete mystery as to whether or not the network would be ordering another season of the revival. Earlier this month, we only knew for sure that David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson would be reprising the roles of special agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully for an audio production of the graphic novel series The X-Files: Cold Cases. Would they ever play the characters again on television?

The answer: yes. Fox has ordered a new season of The X-Files that will run for ten episodes and air sometime in late 2017 or early 2018. Production begins this summer.

Created by Chris Carter, The X-Files originally ran on Fox from 1993 to 2002. In the midst of that, 1998, there was also an X-FILES feature film. During the fourteen years between seasons, a second feature was made and was released in 2008.

Fox president David Madden had this to say about the show:

Iconic characters, rich storytelling, bold creators – these are the hallmarks of great TV shows. And they are some of the reasons why The X-Files has had such a profound impact on millions of fans worldwide. Chris' creativity, along with the brilliant work of David and Gillian, continue to propel this pop culture phenomenon, and we can't wait to see what fresh mysteries Mulder and Scully uncover in this next chapter of The X-Files."

I've never been an X-Files viewer, but this second season of the revival, which will technically be the eleventh season of the show, gives me another reason to try to catch up on it all.
