Once it became clear that the DCEU was crashing and burning and the new DCU was set to rise from its ashes, there were questions of which characters, if any, would make the leap to the relaunched franchise. One character who seemed to be continuing was Wonder Woman, as Gal Gadot said she had met with James Gunn and Peter Safran, who told her they would develop Wonder Woman 3 with her.
As we know, that’s not happening, and Gadot recently spoke about the whole situation while chatting with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast. She wasn’t too happy with how DC Studios treated her, or how they treated Henry Cavill, who was brought back as Superman for about two seconds before he got the boot again.
Horowitz asked Gadot if Gunn and Safran had told her that she wouldn’t be back as Wonder Woman. “They told me the opposite,” she said. “They were like, ‘We’re going to develop it with you.’ But I saw the way everybody else was handled, right? The Henry situation was not handled elegantly, to say the least. Same with Patty [Jenkins]. [It] was not handled elegantly.“
Gunn has previously said that the Cavill situation wasn’t handled well.
Gadot continued, “I feel like, you know, we’re all adults and it’s all good. And it’s not even about them. They are there, and they’re there to do what they believe in, and it’s all good.“
Despite how things ended, the actress said she’s “so grateful that I got the opportunity to wear these boots and to have the character be so celebrated and be the vessel at that point in time. And I can only wish for whoever one [sic] it’s going to be to really, you know, come pure to this journey. Because as much as it’s, like—we’re talking about movies and superheroes and blah blah blah—but this character really means so much to so many of us, to really use it respectfully and bring all the love and light it can to this world, and then enjoy the ride. It was never mine. I was always just a vessel.“
DC Studios is working on a new Wonder Woman movie with Supergirl writer Ana Nogueira penning the script.
Although Gal Gadot won’t be returning as Wonder Woman, there are other DCEU actors who have reprised their characters in the new DCU, such as Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and John Cena as Peacemaker. Additionally, it was reported earlier this year that Xolo Maridueña would be returning as Blue Beetle in Man of Tomorrow.
I still think a clean break would have been best. An entirely new universe with new actors and no connection to the DCEU, and we wouldn’t have these lingering questions about who will come back and who won’t.
