As Toho Studio's 29th entry in their GODZILLA franchise continues filming in Japan, sending extras screaming through the streets of Tokyo, details on the new film are starting to emerge.
First, the title is confirmed to be SHIN GODZILLA. The Japanese word "shin" has multiple meanings, including "true" or "new", or it can be associated with deities, and apparently the title here is
meant to be an expression of resurrecting the true Godzilla. As this Godzilla will put the fearful “God” rightly in its name.
The film will do that partially by featuring the largest Godzilla yet, surpassing the 108 meter/355 foot height of the Godzilla occasionally glimpsed in the 2014 American film.
Co-directed by Hideaki Anno and Shinji Higuchi from a screenplay written by Anno, SHIN GODZILLA takes place in modern day Japan and sees the United States getting involved when "a monster" starts rampaging through the country.
The cast includes Hiroki Hasegawa as the lead character, an "honest and straight-forward" government official; Yutaka Takenouchi as another government official; and Satomi Ishihara (pictured below) as the heroine, an agent from the U.S.
Hasegawa and Ishihara both recently worked with Higuchi on his ATTACK ON TITAN films.
SHIN GODZILLA is expected to reach theatres in Japan during the summer of 2016. I hope there won't be much of a wait for its international release, because I am very excited to see the return of Toho's Godzilla.
