We're now just a little over a month out from the Amazon Prime premiere of Good Omens, an epic six-part television series that brings the apocalyptic events authors Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett imagined in their novel Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter to the screen. To help us prepare for the series, a new promo has arrived online that shows a demon singing a lullaby to the Antichrist – plus glimpses of things like alien spacecraft and sea monsters.
Written by Gaiman and directed by Douglas Mackinnon, the Good Omens TV adaptation is said to be "equal parts humor and horror, fantasy, drama". When the story begins,
the Apocalypse is near and Final Judgment is set to descend upon humanity. According to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter Witch (the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies), the world will end on a Saturday. Next Saturday, in fact. Just before dinner.
So the armies of Good and Evil are amassing, Atlantis is rising, and tempers are flaring. Everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except Aziraphale, a somewhat fussy angel, and Crowley, a fast-living demon—both of whom have lived amongst Earth's mortals since The Beginning and have grown rather fond of the lifestyle—are not actually looking forward to the coming war. And… someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.
Michael Sheen and David Tennant star as Aziraphale and Crowley, respectively. They're joined in the cast by Adria Arjona as occultist Anathema Device; Nina Sosanya as Sister Mary Loquacious of the Chattering Order of St Beryl; Ned Dennehy as Duke of Hell Hastur; Ariyon Bakare as Duke of Hell Ligur; Jack Whitehall as witch hunter Pulsifer, a.k.a. Newt; Miranda Richardson as psychic medium / courtesan Madame Tracy; Michael McKean as Sgt. Shadwell, the leader of the witch-finder army; Jon Hamm as archangel Gabriel; Anna Maxwell Martin as Beelzebub, "the ultimate demon"; Nick Offerman as "the U.S. Ambassador and father to Warlock, the child mistaken for the Antichrist"; Mireille Enos as War; Yusuf Gatewood as Famine; Lourdes Faberes as Pollution; Brian Cox as Death; Josie Lawrence as Agnes Nutter; Frances McDormand as the voice of God; and Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of a giant animated Satan, which we get to see a glimpse of in the trailer.
Good Omens was produced by BBC Studios, Amazon Studios, Blank Corporation, and Narrativia. Gaiman and Mackinnon served as executive producers alongside Chris Sussman, Simon Winstone, and Rob Wilkins.
The show will be available for viewing in over 200 countries and territories through the Amazon Prime streaming service as of May 31st. It will also be airing on BBC Two in the UK.
I have never read the book, but I am very intrigued by this series. I'm going to be giving it a try on Amazon as soon as it's available.
