Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3: James Gunn teases a bigger and more emotional movie

Those attending San Diego Comic-Con were able to see the first teaser for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Although director James Gunn won’t be releasing it for the rest of us, he did tease to THR that the Guardians of the Galaxy sequel is a bigger and more emotional movie than the first two.

This is a much bigger movie than the other two movies, and it’s a much more emotional movie than the other two movies,” James Gunn said. “And it’s a longer movie than the other two movies — it’s bigger in every way.” The Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 teaser screened at Comic-Con wasn’t only a surprise for the audience, but the cast as well. Karen Gillan said that the cast shed plenty of tears while watching the footage for the first time as it brought back the deeply emotional experience of making the movie.

It was emotional making it, for sure. There was, of course, so much fun in the film and seeing fun sequences where the emotion isn’t so heavy, but ohh, there are scenes where the emotion is heavier than it’s ever been in the Guardians world. It was hard to get through some of it.

Gillan continued, “It definitely feels like the most epic. It’s complex, and the characters are having to deal with that. It’s very emotional for all of them. And then we’re also dealing with the fact that this is the end of an era of sorts, and so there’s a lot of emotion.” As James Gunn has said that this will be the last Guardians of the Galaxy movie with this team, I’m sure there won’t be many dry eyes in the theater when it’s finally released.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will star Chris Pratt as Peter Quill, Zoe Saldaña as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, Karen Gillan as Nebula, Bradley Cooper as Groot, Vin Diesel as Groot, Pom Klementieff as Mantis, Elizabeth Debicki as Ayesha, Sean Gunn as Kraglin, Sylvester Stallone as Stakar, Will Poulter as Adam Warlock, Maria Bakalova as Cosmo the Spacedog, and Chukwudi Iwuji as the High Evolutionary. The film will be released on May 5, 2023.
